Modi Vs TeestaCommenting on the case filed by the Gujarat government against social activist Teesta Setalvad, the SC said that the initiative to start a probe against Teesta was a "spurious" case to victimise the social activist.

A bench of justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana Prakash Desai said that “This is a hundred percent spurious case to victimise the petitioner (Setalvad)."

The bench was hearing a petition filed by the social activist challenging the Gujarat High Court’s order of not quashing an FIR filed against her by the Government. The government had filed a case against her at a police station in Panchmahal district of the state on exhumation of the bodies from a graveyard near river Panam.

The bench asked the advocate appearing for the Gujarat Government to go through the First Information Report (FIR) of the case and advise the government not to proceed with it.

The court also extended its interim stay imposed on July 29, 2011 on criminal proceedings against Setalvad till the next date of hearing. The matter has been posted for March 23.
