After the amnesty scheme for Tax defaulters, the government has come up with a similar scheme for power consumers who have been blacklisted by Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL). The new scheme was announced by the state energy department.

Giving details about the scheme, Minister of state for Energy Saurabh Patel said that about 3.56 lakh customers who were involved in power theft or have defaulted in paying power bills will get the benefit of the amnesty scheme. The total dues from defaulters are to the tune of Rs 965 crore.

As per the scheme, BPL families who have defaulted or those residential and farmer consumers who have an outstanding bill of Rs 5,000 with their electricity connections cut off, their total dues will be waived off including penalty and interest.

In case of industries which have outstanding bill of Rs one crore or less, the waiver will be of only interest and penalty. There will be no relaxation in the bill amount

The scheme will be applicable for the dues till March 31, 2011. “In those cases, where the court has given its verdict, the amnesty scheme will not be applicable. Only those cases which are pending in the court or at the admission stage will get the benefit of the amnesty scheme,” Patel said, adding that once the case was settled, the person would be eligible for new power connections.
