The Gujarat High Court has come down hard on the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for its carelessness towards the iconic Dandi Pul. A two member bench of the HC has asked the AMC  to clean up the area near the historic Dandi bridge by cordoning it off. It has also the civic body to submit a status report before it on Monday.

The HC had initiated Suo Moto proceedings against the Municipal Corporation and the State Government after media reports that a section of the bridge had been damaged due to a fire in the garbage dumped there. The garbage had been dumped there by a safai kaamdar of the AMC.

The court also allowed two people, Hemant Chauhan and Dhimant Badhia, to join in the suo motu petition related to bad maintenance of the historic place near Gandhi Ashram. The they both are connected to Gandhian activities and had sought high court permission to join in the proceedings.

The counsel for Chauhan, Rashmin Jani submitted before the court that, as many as 48 communications have been made by Gandhi Ashram authorities regarding pollution due to discharge of sewage water from Kali Gam and other localities. Even the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Governor’s office, office of in-charge minister of Ahmedabad city, Anandiben Patel have communicated to the AMC to take action in curbing the pollution. However the civic body did not pay heed to their pleas.

Jani further said that the AMC has made plans to make a garden and construct the Mahatma Gandhi Jalvihar (waterbody) behind and adjacent to the Gandhi Ashram. However, the discharge of sewage water continues which creates pollution and also leads to breeding of mosquitoes.

Earlier media reports had stated that the bridge, from where Gandhiji set off on his Dandi Yatra had suffered extensive damage due to the fire. The incident took place a day before World Heritage Day on April 18. AMC workers had set the garbage lying beneath the bridge on fire which caused the wooden supports of the bridge to burn down.
