DIG sets up team to probe case against IPS officer Satish Verma
Gujarat Global News Network, Gandhinagar
The Director General of Police Chitranjan Singh has constituted a team to look into the case of custodial death of three persons in Porbandar. 17-year-old had taken place when IPS officer Satish Verma was the district superintendent of police.Â
The team will be headed by Additional DGP (law and order) Shivanand Jha and names of other members will be announced later. The police have asked people to provide information about the case. People can make written or oral presentation of any information they have on the death of Jasu Gagan Siyad, Ahir Narayan Jesti and Ahir Ranmal Ram in police custody.
The move by the DGP is being seen as a witch hunt of IPS officer Satish Verma on behalf of the state government. It is believed that the state government is unhappy with Verma as he had headed the special investigative team that reopened the probed into Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case.
Verma had also filed an affidavit in the high court that Ishrat and three people along with her were killed in a staged encounter even as the probe had not been completed.Â
The state government had tried to fix Verma in another case by opening a probe into his role in Gosabara arms and RDX landing case. However, he got relief after the high court stayed proceedings against him and other senior officers.
Verma is presently posted as of principal of the police training school in Junagadh.  Â
