The ongoing fight between Majdoor and Malik in the textile industry of Gujarat has escalated to another level. Workers from Ashima textile have gone on strike from Thursday demanding better wages even as the dead lock of striking labourers at Arvind Mill continues.

800 workers from Ashima Textiles’ denim and yarn dyeing division at Khokhra skipped work demanding 40 per cent wage hike. Union leader for Ashima mill workers Ashok Singh said, “We will continue the strike unless our genuine demand for 40 per cent salary hike in our basic pay is not accepted.”  The union has given the management 48 hours to decide and get back to them regarding their demands. If they do not get any reply till then, the workers have threatened to go on an indefinite strike.

Top management at Ashima has called the strike illegal. Chintan Parikh, chairman and managing director, Group Ashima said that “The wage hike issue has been pending with the competent authority. However, to give an interim relief, we hike wages by Rs 25 per day.”

The workers have countered the claim saying that they have been offered the hike as ad hoc pay, which means it can be taken back at anytime at the discretion of the management.

Meanwhile the deadlock at Arvind's Naroda plant shows no sign of breaking. 1500 workers of Ankur Mill have also joined the strike.
