An evolved DRDO technology to treat biological wastes of soldiers serving in high altitudes of Ladakh and Siachen, is set to radically alter the rural sanitation and decomposition woes of fecal wastes in the plains across the country.

Six twin bio-digester toilets based on the technology was launched by DRDO in a tie-up with FICCI on Sunday, at Dhamra, Odisha, more famously known for the recent launches of various DRDO-developed missiles such as Agni, Akash, Prithvi among several others, from its nearby Wheeler Island test site.

The project was inaugurated by Minister of State (MoS) (Independent charge) Statistics and Programme Implementation, and MoS for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Shri Srikant Kumar Jena, in the presence of Union Minister for Rural Development, Drinking Water and Sanitation, Shri Jai Ram Ramesh.

1,000 bio-digester toilets are proposed to be commissioned along the 90-Km Jhamjhadi-Dhamra stretch in north-east Odisha under the pilot project. In a phased manner, over the next decade, the project would encompass all 2,40,000 Gram Panchayats across the country under the ‘Nirmal Bharat Abhiyaan’, stated Shri Jai Ram Ramesh.

The DRDO-FICCI project under the ‘Accelerated Technology Assessment & Commercialization’ (ATAC) programme is a unique initiative that aims at commercializing cutting-edge technologies developed by various labs of DRDO for civilian applications. DRDO is engaged in identifying relevant technologies developed by its scientists for national security and adapt to solve the problems faced by common man through innovation.

“Bio Digester is one such technology developed by DRDO to solve the problem faced by the soldiers in high altitudes and adapted successfully for use at all terrains - be it plains, deserts, marshy lands or other temperate zones. The benefit of this technology can bring a major change in the quality of life and help to lead a healthy life across the world,” stated Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri and Secretary Department of Defence R&D, Dr VK Saraswat.

Bio-Digester technology has been developed by Defence Research and Development Establishment (DRDE), Gwalior and Defence Research Laboratory (DRL), Tezpur, two constituent laboratories under DRDO. The innovation degrades and converts the human waste into usable water and gasses in an eco-friendly manner.

The generated gas can be utilized for energy and cooking, and water for irrigation purposes. The process involves the bacteria which feed upon the fecal matter inside the tank, through anaerobic process finally degrading the matter and releasing methane gas that can be used for cooking, along with the treated water.

“The bio-digester technology is an innovative and cost effective solution for a mega problem of water pollution and health hazard due to open defecation. The effluent coming out of the bio-digesters is odorless, harmless and could be used for gardening and irrigation as well,” DRDO Chief Controller (R&D) (Life Sciences and International Cooperation) Dr W Selvamurthy stated highlighting the technical aspects.
