STF forms teams to investigate Gujarat encounters

The of Special Task Force (STF) looking into 16 encounters carried out by state police between 2003 and 2006 has formed different teams to investigate the encounters.
Special Task Force (STF) headed by retired Supreme Court judge, justice HS Bedi will begin inquiry into 16 encounters carried out by state police between 2003 and 2006. The announcement of the formation of teams for investigating specific cases was done by the joint commissioner of police – special branch and crime, AK Sharma.
According to Sharma, the teams were formed and finalized following a high level meeting on Saturday. Deputy inspector general (DIG) DR Patel, additional commissioner of police, Crime and traffic, Vadodara is the convener of STF. He will lead 3 teams comprising three officers of SP cadre, 4 DySP cadre officers and 5 police inspectors.
According to the plan, two teams will look into 5 cases each, while a third team will look into 6 cases. A DySP cadre officer of a team will remain as the main Investigative Officer (IO) for each case.
The three SP cadre officers who will lead these three teams are Sandeep Singh, SP, Vadodara Rural, Maninder Singh Pavar, SP, Bhavnagar, and RV Asari, SP, Anand. Singh and Asari will look into 5 cases each, while Pavar will look into 6 cases of encounter.
Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered an inquiry into all the 16 encounters staged by the Gujarat police and had appointed retired justice HS Bedi as the chairman of the monitoring authority. However, as justice Bedi cannot read Gujarati, all the cases had to be translated in English before submitting to him for review, one by one. “Till now, we have translated three cases and submitted the report, after which we received a green signal to probe the three cases,” said Sharma on Sunday. Sharma is also the in charge JCP of Ahmedabad crime branch.
These three cases include encounter of Surat’s Mahesh Gadhwali, Valsad’s Dungariyo Machhar and Valsad’s Sanjay aka Rahul Sharda Prasad.
