Dhanera town of Banaskantha district has witnessed five deaths due to Cholera in the last 4 days. 200 other people in the town have taken ill with cholera like symptoms. On Wednesday, district administration declared the town cholera-affected.
J B Vora, district collector, Banaskantha, said, “ Nearly 200 cases of diarrhoea had been reported in the town over the last 3-4 days. Some samples from patients were sent to BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad for testing. As one patient had tested positive for cholera, we have notified Dhanera as a cholera-affected town,”
The district administration has asked the people to drink the tap water only after boiling it. Also people in the two have been directed to avoid slate food and keep water pots and utensils clean.
Minister of state for health, Parbat Patel, who visited the town said that it is possible that there was a leakage somewhere in the drinking water pipeline which may have led to dirty water getting into the water pipeline.
“Our teams have gone from house to house in the affected area of the town. Many suspected cholera cases have been sent to civil hospital for treatment,” Patel said.
Cholera is an infection of the small intestine that causes a large amount of watery diarrhea. It is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The bacteria release a toxin that causes increased release of water from cells in the intestines, which produces severe diarrhea. Transmission occurs primarily by drinking water or eating food that has been contaminated by the feces of an infected person.
