Justice M R Shah of the Gujarat high court has set a deadline of Gandhi Jayanti for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to complete the probe in the Sadiq Jamal Mehtar encounter case.  It has asked the CBI to complete all formalities by Oct 2 and “come out with the truth.”

The CBI has asked the court for three month extension to complete formalities like DNA profiling and gathering other forensic reports. The CBI also wanted time to interrogate Mumbai-based journalist Ketan Tirodkar who appeared before the court on Thursday.

Granting three months, Justice Shah directed the probe agency to cover all aspects of the investigation. The court also issued express directions to other agencies, like forensic laboratories, to support the CBI.

Sadiq Jamal was killed in an encounter on January 13, 2003, by the city police crime branch. The officials had branded him a Lashkar-e-Taiba operative out to kill chief minister Narendra Modi as reprisal for the 2002 riots.

The CBI will now interrogate Tirodkar, who is the key to cracking the Sadiq Jamal encounter case. According to Tirodkar, he had introduced Sadiq Jamal to Nayak, who kept the latter in illegal custody and then handed him over to the Gujarat police a couple of days before the encounter. Tirodkar also confessed to have witnessed the transfer of Sadiq’s custody and he even filed an affidavit saying so before the Gujarat high court.

Finding out about Tirodkar’s affidavit before the MCOCA court in Mumbai, Sadiq’s brother, Shabbir demanded an independent probe in this case.
