Pakistan’s new Chief Election Officer is “Made in India”

Pakistan has appointed Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim, a former Supreme Court judge, as its new Chief Election Officer.  The new Chief Election Commissioner of our neighbour country has, in fact a very deep Indian connection.

It would not be wrong to say that Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim is “Made In India” as he was born in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat in a Gujarati Muslim family. He went on to attended Gujarat Vidyapith, located in Ahmedabad, where he earned his LLB with distinctions in 1949. In the year 1950, Ebrahim migrated to Pakistan with his family.

Hence Ebrahim, who has been a senior advocate of Pakistan Supreme Court, former Federal Law Minister, former Attorney General of Pakistan, former judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and former Governor of Sindh , holds his basic LLB degree from Gujarat Vidyapith.

While at Gujarat Vidhyapith, Ebrahim studied courses on philosophy and also attended the lectures given by Mahatma Gandhi. Many believe these teachings of Gandhi which played an important role in his advocacy for non-violence. In Pakistan, he attended Sindh Muslim College where he received LLM degree and an honorary Juris Doctor in 1960.

Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim was appointed unanimously as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan on Monday by the Parliamentary Committee on appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner.
