Parshottam Solanki, minister of state for fisheries, has filed a petition in the Gujarat high court challenging the Governor’s sanction for his prosecution. The governor had recently given the sanction for Solanki’s prosecution under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

In his petition, Slonaki has contended that a Governor does not have the power to grant sanction for prosecution without the aid and advice of the council of ministers. Prakash Thakkar, counsel for Parshottam Solanki said that, “We have challenged the Governor’s decision on merit. We have stated that the decision is in contravention of the order of a seven-judge Supreme Court bench and violates various provisions of the Constitution,”

The minister has also contended that he had taken the decision on awarding the contracts keeping the interest of poor fishermen in mind. The counsel for the minister said that the decision was taken to ensure that poor people also get contracts. “If the government had taken the auction route, it would have only benefited rich businessmen,” Thakkar said.

Solanki is facing corruption changes in a Rs400 crore fisheries scam. He is accused of corruption in awarding contracts for fishing at state reservoirs without inviting bids for their auction.

The minister’s petition is to come up for hearing on Monday.
