After winning the Uttar Pradesh assembly election with a thumping majority, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has set its eye on the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections. The party has announced that it shall contest from at least 56 of 182 Assembly seats in Gujarat.

Brahmashankar Tripathi, Education minister of Uttar Pradesh made the announcement in Vadodara at the party workers meet on Thursday. He also said that the party is open to forming an alliance with BJP or Congress in Gujarat.

"We want to strengthen the secular forces and contest Gujarat Assembly polls based on the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi," Tripathi said. SP Gujarat unit president Surendrasinh Yadav said that “we have identified 56 candidates. The number may go up, as there is time for the elections and we are looking for good and clean candidates. We have received good response from North Gujarat, the belt from Ahmedabad to Vapi and some places in Saurashtra region. We are aiming at migrated North Indian people living in the state, Muslim and the youth.”

It is noteworthy that Shahid Siddiqui, the editor of Urdu weekly Nai Duniya, whose interview of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi recently had created a large controversy, had alleged there has been a secret tie up between the BJP and SP in Gujarat. He had alleged that the SP has plans to contest the 2012 assembly election in Gujarat to cut into the vote bank of Congress party in Gujarat.
