After a long wait of 40 years, there is hope for the Ukai-Godhra Link Canal. A division bench of Gujarat High Court has directed state government to start work on Ukai-Gordha Link Canal on the right bank of Tapi River.

Ukai Right Bank Canal Adivasi Adhikar Samiti had filed a PIL stating that the Ukai Dam Project was completed in 1972 and as per the project plan, canals on both sides of the river were to be drawn. While the canals on the left bank were completed long back, canal work on the right bank of the river has not commenced even after 40 years.

The division bench of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice JB Pardiwala directed the secretary of Narmada Water Resources, Water Supply and Kalpasar Department to start the work at the earliest while disposing of public interest litigation.

Advocate SH Iyer, appearing for the petitioners, submitted that the state government had already sanctioned Rs44 crore towards cost of constructing the canal in 1997.
