Another farmer, Purshottam Chavda, from the drought hit Saurashtra region committed suicide on Thursday taking the total toll to 12 in the state.

The 65 year old, consumed poison in Dhanfuliya village in Vanthali taluka of Junagadh district and committed suicide.

On the basis of the statement of the relatives, Rajkot police, registered a case of suicide due to crop failure and transferred the complaint to Junagadh police. His daughter in law Sheetal Chavda said, “My father-in-law had taken a loan of Rs 30,000 and sown groundnut and other oil seeds over 18 bighas of land. With no rain, the entire crop was hit. Our financial condition is also not good. He couldn’t bear this and consumed poison.”

Instead of taking concrete steps to provide relief to the drought hit farmers, the State Government and the opposition were seen politicking over the issue.  state agriculture minister Dileep Sanghani said that until the Central government comes up with a comprehensive policy to provide relief to the farmers, the state government cannot do anything.
