Former Union Minister Kashiram Rana passes away

kashiram ranaFormer Union Textile minister and ex BJP leader Kashiram Rana has passed away today in Ahmedabad. He was 75.

Rana was in Ahmedabad to attend the executive meeting of the Gujarat Parivartan Party. At 1:30 am, he complained of chest pain and some uneasiness. He was rushed to the UN Mehta hospital where he was later declared dead.

Rana was born on April 7, 1938. He was elected as an MLA for the first time in 1975 from Surat East seat. But he lost the next two assembly elections in the years n 1980 and 1985. He then contested the Lok Sabha elections in 1989 and won from Surat seat. Rana went on to win consecutive Lok Sabha elections held in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004 from the same constituency Surat. 

When he was made the Union textile minister, Rana was the only Gujarati in the cabinet of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. He was the Union Textile minister. But his career graph plummeted drastically after 2007 when he was denied the ticket by the BJP during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Rana then drifted away from the BJP and recently joined the newly formed Gujarat Parivartan Party with Keshubhai Patel and Gordhan Zadafia
