Heavy rains lash Gujarat, flood threat in Surat

Heavy rains lashed many parts of the state on Thursday disrupting rail and vehicular traffic. Large amount of water is being released in Ukai dam in Surat and Narmada dam causing the low lying areas to be flooded.

The level in Narmada dam will reach record 129.50 ft on Friday morning.

The villages on the bank of River in Vadodara, Bharuch and Narmada district have been put on alert and the district administration has geared up to meet any eventuality. Water is being released in Vanakbori and Kadana dams posing a threat to low lying areas.

In Surat the district administration has been put on alert as 4.25 lakh cusec water has been released from Hathnoor dam in Maharasthra which has reached Ukai. 16 gates of the dam have been opened. About 4 lakh cusec water is being released from Hathnoor dam. There is flood threat in Tapi River.

Heavy rains in Dahod disrupted rail traffic and eight trains between Delhi and Mumbai were halted at various places and four trains were cancelled. The trains held up in Gujarat since morning due to heavy rains are 19019-Bandra Dehradun, 19037 Bandra-Gorakhpur, 12283 Ernakulam-Nizamuddin, 12980 Jaipur-Bandra, 19024 Ferozpur-Mumbai, 12472 Jammutawi-Bandra, 12449 Madgam-Nizamuddin and 12926 Amritsar-Bandra. The tracks at Jekot railway station near Dahod district were submerged in water after incessant rains, according to a western railway release.

"The Dahod-Limkheda highway had to be closed in morning due to heavy rains, impacting vehicular traffic, however it was opened later on. In wake of heavy downpour the state administration has put on alert 180 villages in Panchmahal and Vadodara districts.

According to regional Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), in last three days rainfall has been good in Gujarat. The rain deficiency in Gujarat has come down to 46% from 56%, due to heavy rains in this second spell of monsoon, according to officials.
