Bharat Bandh slows down life in Gujarat

Like many other BJP ruled states, the Bharat Bandh announced by the NDA was seen in force in Gujarat. Most of the schools and colleges in the state remained closed.
Shops were seen open in many parts of Ahmedabad in the morning, but as BJP members took to the streets to enforce the bandh, most of them downed their shutters. The Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) and Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) moved normally in the morning, but were shut down fearing damage of property at around 11 AM.
Most of the retail shops and malls were also closed for day, giving their employees a day to relax. Commercial areas like Ashram road, CG Road and Prahladnagar wore a deserted look which most of the shops and offices remaining closed.
 While train services were disrupted in many parts of the country, there were no such incidences in Gujarat barring one. BJP workers stopped a goods train at Udhna station in Surat.
TV actress and BJP Rajya Sabha member Smriti Zubin Irani flew down to Ahmedabad to participate in the protest. She led a group of protestors in Maninagar.
Banks and medical services were spared as most of them conducted their operations smoothly.
In Surat, the diamond and textile industry supported the bandh as a result of which both the markets and retail outlets connected to them remained closed.Â
