Gujarat finally got a full time Director General of Police (DGP) with the state government promoting 1976-batch IPS officer Chittranjan Singh as a full-time DGP. The state government also promoted three other additional DGPs to DGP rank.
The state was without a fulltime DGP since the last two years. The state government’s unwillingness to appoint a fulltime DGP was seen as part of the strategy to prevent senior-most police officer Kuldip Sharma from becoming the state police chief. Sharma has had bitter relations with the Modi government. He had filed a petition in the Supreme Court stating that Chief Minister Narendra Modi is acting against him with biased and malafide intentions since he performed his duties lawfully, against the whims of Modi and his “henchman” Amit Shah.
At present, Sharma is on deputation at the Bureau of Police Research and Development, Delhi. V K Gupta, the only other officer senior to Singh and one of the contenders for DGP's post, is on deputation to the CBI.
The government has also promoted three other officers, Deepak Swaroop, SK Saikia and Amitabh Pathak to the rank of DGP. Deepak Swaroop, also a 1976-batch IPS officer, has been transferred as Director-General, Home Guard, while the 1977-batch IPS officer Amitabh Pathak has been transferred as DG, anti-corruption bureau. Saikia, a 1977-batch IPS officer, continues to be the police commissioner of Ahmedabad even after promotion as DGP.
State's Home Secretary S K Nanda confirmed the development. "These are the most senior IPS officers in the state. Chittaranjan Singh is the longest-serving in-charge DGP, so it was high time he was given a full-time post. He will oversee the upcoming Assembly elections as the head of the state police force."
