People might say the pen is mightier than a sword, but nothing works better than a gun when it comes to security. This harsh reality has come to light at the Gujarat University, where newly appointed Vice Chancellor Adesh Pal has enlisted the services of gunmen for his personal security.
On Monday, Pal was seen at the Gujarat University campus accompanied by three gunmen. Inquiries revealed that the VC chancellor has hired armed guard for his protection. While three armed guards accompany the VC, two have been stationed at his house. Also bouncers have been hired to keep pesky student leaders and protestors at a distance from the VC’s office.
While such tight security measures around the head of academic institution might sound shocking, it is nothing new at the Gujarat University. Pal’s predecessor Dr Parimal Trivedi had also hired private bouncers for his security at the GU campus.
It would not be totally fair to brand such measures by these men as hyper. Over the past few years, incidences of vandalism and inappropriate behavior by students have been on the rise. There have been incidences when “student leaders” have barged into the VC’s chamber and gheraoed him. Pal was himself heckled by students near the senate hall a few days back regarding his holding of a liquor permit.
