In a bid to gain some control over the situation in Than, the Government has ordered a CID probe into the incidents of Dalit deaths in police firing. It has also announced a compensation of Rs2 lakh to the family of each of the deceased.
The government has also suspended Than police sub-inspector, KP Jadeja. Two state Ministers Ramanlal Vora and Fakir Vaghela were also rushed to Than. The families of the deceased accepted the bodies of the three youths killed in the firing after visiting ministers and the state government gave the assurance that appropriate action will be taken against the erring policemen. Later, the deceased youths were cremated with thousands of people taking part in their funeral procession.
The police have also started investigation into the case. Â The six have been charged with attempt to murder and rioting. They were among the 17 people detained after the clash at the fair on Saturday in which three policemen were also injured.Â
On the other hand the Dalits have accused the police of firing at them without warning. They also claim the officers were biased during the arrests as no action has been against either the Bharwad community members or the policemen who fired at them. Some Bharwad youths had allegedly assaulted a Dalit youth at a local fair on Friday, setting off the chain of events which led to the police firing in which three Dalits including two minors were killed.
