United Progressive Alliance Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi addressed a large gathering in Rajkot today. She didn’t respond or defend against the allegations made by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi regarding the government expenditure on her foreign visits or medical treatment.
She attacked the BJP government in Gujarat alleging large corruption in the state. Ms. Gandhi said there was a “huge difference” between their preaching and practice on the issue of corruption. She remarked that despite the CAG raising serious issues of corruption and financial mismanagement in BJP ruled states, there is no action. “There is a difference between their preaching and practice...They are not ready to act against their states on the issue of corruption even though there is evidence and CAG reports against them,” she said.
Ms Gandhi also raised the issue of absence of Lokayukta in the Gujarat for the last eight years. She also accused the BJP of not letting the Lokpal bill pass in the Rajya Sabha. They are not against corruption, they are against us...Those who do not allow Parliament to function talk about being against corruption...Are they against the government or the Constitution and the democracy of the country? I leave it for you to decide as you are sensible to understand this,” she said.
Ms Gandhi also defended the UPA government’s decision of allowing FDI in retail. "FDI will allow farmers to get the right price for their produce. Why are some CMs attempting to deceive people on it. I wish to ask is it not the right of farmers to get the right price for their produce."
Defending the diesel price hike and limiting number of subsidised LPG cylinders to 6, she asked why the Gujarat government is not slashing VAT on the petroleum products when Congress governments in various states have done so to reduce the burden on the people.
"It is known that Gujarat charges highest VAT."
