In the last ten years, 37,248 people have committed suicide in the vibrant Gujarat of Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Of these 7,062 were farmers. What is shocking is the fact that 80 per cent of these persons were of below 40 years, Gujarat Pradesh Congress President Arjun Modhwadia said today.

Modhwadia has based his claims on the information he has culled from government records through Right to Information applications. A book with data of suicide was released at a media interaction function organized at the headquarters of Gujarat Congress today evening.

He said that this represented a very dark picture of Gujarat because suicide was the last step of frustration in a society. This figure showed that the stress level was very high in the society and much of this represented younger generation, people below 40 years. Every fifth person committing suicide is of below 20 years of age which was a very dangerous sign for a society.

Social Scientist Gaurang Jani, Columnist Vidhyut Joshi and Dr. Edvin Masihi who were also present in the book launch programme were of the view that this showed breaking of social fabric and a great struggle for survival by people. Jani said that this also showed that people were lured by dream which could not be fulfilled leading to great bouts of frustration in young people and ultimately suicide.
