The Election Commission’s decision to seize cash beyond Rs.2.50 lakh in transit is facing severe opposition both from the business community and ruling BJP.

Businessmen of the state are up in arms against this decision and have decided to appeal to the commission regarding this. The BJP on the other hand has described this as “terrorist attack” on businessmen.

BJP national vice president Purshottam Rupala in a statement said that there was a month and a half to go to elections and this time is festive season when traders have to make purchases. People also buy gold silver and other things in cash. In such a situation EC’s diktat will affect Diwali business, he said.

Meanwhile EC has so far seized Rs.2.90 lakh unaccounted money from different parts of the state. Chief Electoral Officer Anita Karwal said that in all Rs.1.43 crore was intercepted in 12 cases across the state but Rs.1.41 crore has been returned.

Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry has written a letter to the EC pointing out that this decision had severely affected retail business in the state during Diwali time.
