The Election Commission of India has reprimanded Gujarat Congress President Arjun Modhwadia for his remarks against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Modhwadia had equated Modi with a monkey and a rabid dog in one of his election speech.
Following a complaint by BJP MP and Gujarat BJP General Secretary Balkrishna Shukla, the ECI had issued a notice to Modhwadia and asked him to reply by November 24. In his speech on 2nd November, referring to Modi, Modhwadia had said that, “Every morning he asks Dr. Manmohan Singh, come and fight elections against me …. Just as a monkey climbs tree and sitting up on that tree asks the lion standing down on the ground to come up, come up …… Arrey, you will have to come down one day ………..he will not come up …….. He is a lion ……. king of the jungle.”
The ECI studied the transcript of the CD provided by the complainant and found Modhwadia guilty of breach of Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The MCC states that Criticism of other political parties, when made, shall be confined to their policies and programme, past record and work. Parties and candidates shall refrain from criticism of all aspects of private life, not connected with the public activities of the leaders of workers of other parties.
