Record voting in first phase of Gujarat polls

Large number of voters came out on Thursday to exercise their franchise in the first phase of Gujarat polls. A record 68 percent voting was registered for 87 seats in Saurasthra and South Gujarat.
During the last elections in 2007 the voter turnout in the first phase was 59.77 percent.
Voting was peaceful with no untoward incident anywhere. According to Chief Election Officer Anita Karwal Tapi district recorded highest voting of 76 percent while Jamnagar district recorded lowest of 63 percent.
Voting was low in the morning but picked up in the afternoon. A 117 year old woman cast her vote in Kutiyana in Porbander district. She was brought to the polling booth by her family members.
There were few complaints of EVMs not working properly at some places but they were replaced immediately. More than 1.60 lakh polling staff including 87 general observers, 15 police observers and 40 expenditure observers were deployed for the polling.
District wise polling figures are : Bharuch- 67.5, Narmada -71.8, Surat-64, Navsari-72, Dang-66, Valsad-67, Junagadh-67, Rajkot 68.8, Amreli-65.6, Porbander-63.5, Surendranagar-68, Bhavnagar-68 and Ahmedabad-66.8.
