Somabhai Patel, Congress MLA from Limdi resigned from his post today. Patel is also Lok Sabha MP from Surendranagar.

Patel’s resignation has further reduced Congress’s strength to 59 MLAs in the 182 seat house. As per the constitutional provisions, a leader who gets elected from both Parliament and state Assembly seats can only represent in one House and has to decide within 15 days of his last election.

In the recently conducted assembly elections, Congress has won 61 seats. But Savita Khant who had won from Morva Hadak constituency of Panchmahal central Gujarat died of brain hemorrhage leaving the Congress’s strength to 60 MLAs.  Now the Congress has 59 MLAs while BJP has 115, GPP and NCP have 2 and JD(U) has1 MLA in Gujarat Assembly.
