Gujarat celebrates Silver Jubilee of Kite Festival

On the occasion of the silver jubilee of the kite festival, the Gujarat government is taking it to the national stage. For the first time since its beginning in 1989, the kite festival will held outside Gujarat.
Tourism minister Saurabh Patel said the festival is all set to begin its 25th edition, starting Monday and it will be held in Mumbai and Delhi simultaneously. This festival will be celebrated at Priyadarshi Park (Mumbai) and at Connaught Place (New Delhi) on January 7.
Kite flying at night will be another new attraction at this year’s kite festival. Lamps will be tied to kite strings - called Tukkals at the closing ceremony of the festival on January 13. The festival will have simultaneous programmes at Vadodara, Modhera, Surat, Mandvi, Dordo, Somnath and Saputra. Patel said the festival will be held for the first time in Modhera, Dhordo (White Rann), Saputara and Somnath.
This year around 100 international kitists from countries like United Kingdom, France, Italy, Singapore, Switzerland, Spain, Netherlands, Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Curacao, Ukraine, Israel, China, Belgium, New Zealand, Cambodia, Lithuania and Malaysia will attend. Also, 160 kitists from 10 states will also take part.
