100% hike in property tax proposed

A 100% hike in property tax with automatic increase per year on the basis of Wholesale Price Index(WPI) has been proposed by Municipal Commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra.
Presenting the Rs.4425.00 crore draft budget of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation for the year 2013-14 he stressed on completion of ongoing projects without announcing any new project.
According to tax proposals the general tax for residential buildings has been proposed to be increased from present Rs.10 per sq.m to Rs.20 per sq.m. While for commercial buildings it has been proposed to hike the rate from present Rs. 20 to Rs.32 per sq.m. This would fetch an additional Rs.211.72 crore.
Defending the proposal to increase the tax he said that it is being done after 11 years. During this time the expenditure of the AMC had grown over five times. Fro maintaining civic services and implementing new projects steady income flow is necessary. Therefore a proposal for automatic increase in tax on yearly basis on WPI has also been suggested. He said that there would be no change in water and conservancy tax.
A 0.25 percent increase in vehicle tax has also been proposed. This would fetch an additional Rs.18.24 crore, he said.
He said that public transportation would be made stronger and announced phase 3 of BRTS. Mohapatra said that a new 40 km route from Jasodanagar-Hathijan to Vadaj-APMC market would be prepared. Survey and planning of the new route would be done in the next financial year, he added.
24x7 metered water supply project would be initiated in two wards as pilot project. The scheme would be launched in Charodi and Jodhpur wards of new west zone. While it would be mandatory for new buildings to install water meteres.
Looking to increase in number of vehicles in the city planning has been done for new roads and bridges. In 2013-14 six new flyovers at Helmet junction, Dinesh chambers, Hatkeshwar, Income tax and Shyamal have been proposed and Rs. 65.00 crore has been allocated for it.
A new scheme for solid waste management by employing rag pickers has also been proposed. Each house will be provided two waste bins for dry and wet waste. “Our aim is to make the city zero garbage city”, he said.
