Veteran Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela today took over as the leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in the Gujarat assembly.
Yesterday he was appointed as the leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) by Congress prez Sonia Gandhi after leaders from the state had empowered her to choose the leader of the CLP.
Vaghela was the chairman of the election campaign committee during the recently concluded assembly election. The names of Mohansinh Rathwa and Vitthal Radadiya were doing the rounds for the post of the leader of the CLP but finally Vaghela was selected. Many say he was the natural choice after the only two other leaders who could have been considered for the post - Shaktisinh Gohil and Arjun Modhwadia - lost in the election.
The meeting of elected Congress MLAs was held in the state Assembly in the presence of central observers — Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and party’s state in-charge Mohan Prakash. Dikshit met all 59 MLAs one by one, and took their views on who should be CLP leader in the state, sources in the party said. Some MPs had also come to put forward their points along with other state party leaders, sources said.
The CLP also passed four other resolutions, the first of which congratulated Rahul Gandhi for his appointment as vice president of the party. It also hailed the party’s Jaipur declaration, adopted on the concluding day of the Chintan Shivir and AICC meeting, as a historical document. “The Congress MLAs also appreciated the hard work of all party workers and leaders during the state assembly elections,” Dikshit said.
