Vajubhai Vala, the state’s longest serving finance minister was today elected unopposed as the speaker of the 13th Gujarat Assembly. Vala was the only candidate to file a nomination for the speaker’s election.
Gujarat Congress had also approved Vala’s name for the post of Speaker. BJP sources said Vala, before becoming speaker, resigned as a primary member of the BJP. Vala was elected from Rajkot west in the December elections. He has formerly been mayor of Rajkot before he moved to contesting assembly elections. He has held important portfolios including finance, transport and labour.Â
Vala has been elected to the Vidhan Sabha seven times straight — after his initial loss in the 1980 elections.Â
