60 % hike in property tax rates, transfer fees to be introduced

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has announced 60% hike in property tax rates.

The apex committee of AMC- the standing committee on Saturday approved the proposal which was put up in the budget for the year 2013-14. This would levy a burden of Rs.142 crore on the people of the city.  

The committee approved the budget of Rs. 4951 crore. The Municipal Commissioner had presented budget of Rs. 4425 crore in which amendments worth Rs. 526 crore have been put up.

Announcing the hike Standing Committee Chairman Bhupendra Patel said that in residential properties the increase would be from Rs.10 per sq.m. to Rs.16 per sq.m. In commercial the hike is from Rs. 22 to Rs.28 per sq.m. The Municipal Commissioner has proposed Rs.20 in residential and Rs. 32 in commercial properties.

In addition to this the AMC has planned to levy fees on transfer of property. Shah said that at present the corporation does not charge any money while even in panchayats and nagarpalika there is a fee on transfer of property. He said a detailed proposal would be put up before the committee by commissioner.

The standing committee also decided to increase vehicle tax. It did not accept Municipal Commissioner’s proposal for increase in tax on two wheelers and rickshaws proposal for increase in cars and jeeps has been accepted. Accordingly 1% tax would be levied on cars and jeeps whose basic price is upto Rs.2.99 lakh and 1.75% would be levied on vehicles with basic price range of Rs.3- 4.99 lakh. This would fetch an additional Rs. 16.50 crore to the AMC.

He said that main focus in the budget would be on infrastructure and improving civic services. He said that more funds would be allocated for different zones for maintaining essential services. Additional Rs.12.50 crore has been allotted for zonal works.

Five new flyovers have been proposed in the budget on 200 ft ring road. They are helmet junction, Hatkeshwar circle, Shyamal cross roads, Anjali cross roads, Income tax and near Dinesh Chamber. Besides 11 new bridges have been planned.

A stem cell therapy centre in the AMC run Sheth V S Hospital has been planned. It would eb the first of its kind in the state and third in the country after Delhi and Vellore. The trauma ward of the Sheth L G Hospital and Shardaben hospital would be renovated.

The AMC has also decided to increase theatre show tax. Accordingly the tax per show has been increased from Rs.50 to Rs.75 and Rs.25 would be charged per show for video show.
