BJP sweeps nagarpalika elections in Gujarat

BJP has sweeped in nagarpalika elections in the state with the party winning 47 out of the 75.

The performance of Congress remained poor and it lost 11 nagarplaikas. Congress ruled in 20 nagarpalikas but was able to sustain only 9. Though Congress claimed that it won in 19.

Elections for the nagarpalikas were held on Sunday. The counting began on Monday and final results were declared on Tuesday. Out of total 1905 seats, 1144 were captured by BJP while Congress won 449, independents 272, NCP 16, BSP 13, SP 2 and others 9.

BJP won 100% seats in Vallabh Vidyanagar, Kodinar, Salaya, Halvad and Rapar. The party won in Surendranagar, Rapar, Halvad, Talod, Vijaplpor, Vanthli, Dhandhuka, Ode and Balasinor municipalities where Congress was in power. It also snatched away Devgadh Baria and Salaya municipalities from independents and others.

BJP has also won 12 out of 16 seats in by elections. This includes Junagadh municipal corporation two seats.

Gujarat Parivatan Party (GPP) founded by former Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel claimed that it won 54 seats. Party said that its candidates won as independents as the election commission had not allowed party to use its symbol.
