An associate professor of law at M S University has ended up behind bars after he played a prank on the MSU vice-chancellor (VC) professor Yogesh Singh.

Dr Ghanshyam Solanki has been arrested by the police for smearing powder of the plant - mucuna pruriens (locally known as kuvech), a substance that causes immense itching on a chair which was occupied by the Vice Chancellor. The VC professor Yogesh Singh, who was there to attend the seminar, had to leave midway because he was in severe discomfort.

Singh was the chairperson at the seminar on ‘Right to Education: Issues and Challenges’, organized to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad. Justice Sonia Gokani of the Gujarat high court was chief guest.

“Forensic tests of the chair after a complaint by MSU officials, revealed that somebody had smeared it with itching powder. Further investigations revealed the teacher’s involvement,” police commissioner Satish Sharma said.

Solanki has confessed to using the powder but claimed that the prank was not meant for Singh. His real target was in-charge dean of the law faculty, professor S S Bhattacharya.
