The Union Government on Friday put a hold on the controversial notification making proficiency in English compulsory for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) candidates.

Many  Lok Sabha members opposed the change which made it tougher for students to answer in regional languages.

A meeting of UPSC officials will be called to resolve the issue, Minister of State for personnel and training V Narayanaswamy told the House. As per the notification students taking mains after clearing prelims would no longer be allowed to answer in regional language. Besides they will have to appear for English test of 100 marks and the score would be counted in overall results.

This had invited widespread protests from all over the country. Angry LS members said that this would be discriminatory and marginalizing regional languages and promoting English.
