Gujarat HC refuses bail to suspended cop Tarun Barot
Gujarat Global News Network, Ahmedabad
There is no sign of relief for suspended Dy SP Tarun Barot as the Gujarat High Court has refused him bail.
Barot, who has been arrested in the Sadiq Jamal Mehtar fake encounter case, was denied bail by Justice Anant Dave after the CBI submitted before the court that enough evidence has been gathered to show that it was Barot who had gone to Mumbai to take Sadiq’s custody. The CBI’s counsel I H Syed had contended before the court that the investigators even found that Barot was instrumental in destruction of evidence.
Barot had sought bail citing sworn statements by Mumbai journalist Ketan Tirodkar, who had claimed that he had witnessed transfer of Sadiq’s custody from Mumbai cops to Gujarat police on January 11-12, 2003. Barot’s lawyer argued that this version is in contradiction to the CBI claims that Sadiq’s custody was obtained by Gujarat cops on January 3.
Barot is facing charges of abduction, murder and criminal conspiracy in the case. He was charged in December last. Barot has also been arrested in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case also.
Earlier, CBI judge K B Gujarathi had denied bail to Barot with the observation that prima facie it appeared that Barot had taken custody of Sadiq from the Mumbai police on January 3, 2003. The court came to this conclusion after CBI furnished a “classified secret document” recovered from the Mumbai intelligence office. It is a monthly report prepared by the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau, Mumbai, on January 6, 2003.
