The Rajkot police got an earful from the Gujarat High Court over the lathi charge done on members of the Dalit community, who were silently protesting against the murder of their leader.

The police action, on June 25 last year was caught on video.  The bench of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J B Pardiwala the cops’ gesture was a reminder of the concern expressed by Justice Krishna Iyer of the Supreme Court three decades ago, “Who will police the police?” It further observed, “We are shocked to find how a police can mercilessly apply recurring lathi charges on an elderly lady who was simply passing through the road. She did not dare to resist nor did she complain against such cruel act of the police who might be of his son's age…”

Court also criticized stone pelting by cops. “This is something which we have not heard of or have never seen in any case.” The HC treated complaints on this issue as PIL and initiated suo motu proceedings.
