Ahmedabad Asset of ONGC Maintains Upward Production Trend: Johari

Despite 90 percent of its oil wells on artificial lift, Ahmedabad Asset of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has maintained production due to sustained efforts of its team. The major challenges facing the Asset today is reversing decline and enhance production from its old, matured and brown fields.
This is how the Executive Director of Ahmedabad Asset Anil Johari describes the performance of one of the biggest Assets of ONGC during 2011, golden jubilee year of the Asset. Majority of the fields of Ahmedabad Asset are more than 30 years old and are matured fields. The era of self-flow is on the decline and more than 90 % of wells are on Artificial Lift.
There are various challenges like multilayered, heterogeneous, low permeability, tight reservoirs with low productivity per well and layer wise small reserves. The challenges are being faced with skill & technology upgradation, he said. The Current production level, as on December 2011, is around 4450 TPD.
Several strategic initiatives have been taken like Drilling Sidetrack Wells, High-angle Wells, Horizontal Wells, induction of latest, state-of-the-art Logging Tools, induction of latest technology and improvement of Artificial Lift Systems. The results are promising with oil production graph showing upward trend, according to Mr. Johari.
Talking about the direct contribution of Ahmedabad Asset, he said that ONGC Ahmedabad is fuelling about more than 38 industries in and around Ahmedabad through supply of Gas. ONGC Ahmedabad’s Gas is the ‘Energy Lifeline’ of various industries viz. Ceramics, Glass, Glazing, Dairy, Power generation, Textiles, Chemicals, Fertilizer, etc.
The Asset has paid a whopping amount as Royalty (Rs. 3080 Crores), Cess, VAT, Sales Tax and other (Rs. 3454 Crores) to exchequer in last one decade (2001 – 2011). ONGC Ahmedabad too shares subsidy burden (Rs. 9145 Crores in last one decade, 2001-2011), subsidy provided by the government on cooking gas, kerosene, etc.
The first Well, Kalol Well #1 (of Ahmedabad Asset) was spudded in Sertha on April 18, 1961.
