Supreme Court orders probe in 21 encounters in Gujarat
Gujarat Global News Network, Ahmedabad
In yet another major setback to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Supreme Court today ordered probe into all 21 encounters that took place in Gujarat between 2003 and 2006. This follows Public Interest Litigations seeking thorough probe into encounters in Gujarat.
The Court asked Justice (retired) MB Shah to submit a report on this in three months. The Court has allowed Justice Shah to pick up police officers for the probe. He can pick up police officers either from Special Investigation Team or from outside.
The court was hearing two PILs filed by journalist B.G. Verghese and Bollywood star Javed Akhtar, seeking a thorough investigation into 21 alleged fake encounters in Gujarat since 2003. The petitioners sought monitory relief for relatives of those killed in encounters.
Earlier this month, Gujarat High Court had upheld appointment of Lokayukta by Governor Dr. Kamla Beniwal. Chief Minister Narendra Modi had challenged the appointment of Justice (Retired) R A Mehta as Lokayukta on the ground that the Governor had not consulted council of ministers.
