Padma awards announced, Kartikeya Sarabhai gets Padma Shri

The government today announced the Padma Awards for the year 2012. This year the President of India has approved 109 awards. Kartikeya V. Sarabhai from Gujarat has been selected for the Padma Shri award in the Environmental Education category. He is the only Padma award recipient from Gujarat.
Kartikeya Sarabhai is a well known environmentalist and industrialist from the Sarabhai family. He is the son of the renowned scientist Vikram Sarabhai, and Mrinalini Sarabhai, a noted danseuse. Sarabhai is the founder director of the Centre for Environment Education. The organization works towards developing programmes and materials to increase awareness about the environment and sustainable development.
The Padma awards this year comprise 5 Padma Vibhushan, 27 Padma Bhushan and 77 Padma Shri Awards. There are 19 ladies among the awardees.
Padma Awards, the country’s highest civilian awards, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in all disciplines/ fields of activities, viz. art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
 ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
