Controversial Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University, Dr. Parimal Trivedi has sought voluntary retirement. The VC is facing charges of financial irregularities and has a case going on against him for passing casteist remarks against Pankaj Shrimali, a lecturer.

Trivedi is serving his second term as the Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University, the largest university in Gujarat. His term is to end on June 28 this year. But he has asked for retirement from the post of VC ten days before his retirement date.

He has sent his request for Voluntary Retirement to the State Education Department. The receipt of his request has been confirmed by Principal Secretary (Education) Hansmukh Adhia.

But Trivedi might not be able to get the VRS as Former Arts Faculty dean Pradip Prajapati has written letters to Hansmukh Adhia, Jayanti Ravi the state higher education commissioner and the chairman of Ahmedabad Education Society, saying Trivedi could not be given VRS as V-C since he is on deputation from MG Science College where he used to teach physics.

The letter makes it clear that as per the rules Trivedi must o back to his parent college after the expiry of his term on June 28 and then seek VRS. The letter further states that VRS cannot be granted to Trivedi because a criminal case pertaining to financial embezzlement was pending against him and a departmental inquiry was still on against him

“No pensionary benefits can be released to him (Trivedi) till the inquiry is over,” Prajapati said in his letter.

Parimal Trivedi has been in the news for all the wrong reasons since he has been at the post of Vice Chancellor of the University. He holds the distinction of being the first VC of Gujarat University to be arrested by the police.  On Feb 21, he was arrested by the SC/ST cell of the police in relation to the atrocities case filed by Pankaj Shrimali.
