Students can’t work after studies in UK
Gujarat Global News Network, Ahmedabad
With a new regulation coming into effect from today, students going to the United Kingdom for education will not be able to stay back and work after their education is complete. Earlier the students were allowed to apply for employment for at least two years on payment of a visa fee of £500.
This move is deemed to have a negative impact on students applying for student visas to the UK. There has already been a drop in the number of Indian students applying for courses in the UK commencing in September 2012.
The new regulation is part of the series of steps being taken by authorities in UK to check bogus students from entering the UK. Many bogus colleges running fake courses have also been shut down in the past few years.
With unemployment numbers in the UK and USA growing, the governments are bringing in such regulations to check the number of foreign workers. Recently the US has also hiked the fee of the H1B visa.
Under the tier one (post-study work) route, Indian and other non-EU students were able to take up work for two years in the UK after finishing their university courses. This was fancied by self-funding Indian students as it enabled them to repay some of the loan they had taken to come to Britain. The work experience also improved their job prospects in India.
A spokesman for the British home ministry told “The previous scheme was too generous. There were no restrictions and it was found that this was being exploited with people engaging in low-skill work.”
