New Entrance exam format for IITs, NITs, IIITs from 2013
Gujarat Global News Network, New Delhi
The HRD ministry has introduced a new format for admissions in to premier institutes like the IITs, NITs and IIITs which will be effective from 2013. Â The new format of common entrance test will give weightage to class 12th board exam results. This system will replace the IIT-JEE and AIEEE.
This decision was taken at a joint meeting the IIT Council, NIT Council and IIIT Council on Monday. The announcement of introduction of the new system from 2013 was made by HRD minister Kapil Sibal.
All aspirants will have to give two exams — JEE main and JEE advanced — to be held on the same day. The aspirant’s set of scores will decide whether he or she will be eligible for admission to the premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), centrally funded institutions like NIITs or other state funded institutions.
As per the new system for admission into IITs, the top 50,000 students will be shortlisted on the basis of their cumulative score for class XII and the main test (50% weightage each). Class XII marks will be standardized on percentile basis by a formula worked out by the Indian Statistical Institute.Â
The final merit list for admission to the IITs will be prepared based on performance of these shortlisted students in the JEE (advanced) exam only. For all other Centrally Funded Institutions, admissions would be based on a combined score which gives a weightage of 40% to class XII board results, and 30% each for the JEE (main) and JEE (advanced).Â
The main test shall be multiple choice type paper, the nature and modalities of the advanced shall be determined by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the IITs.
Even as the process of selection to the IITs would be different then other institutes, the counseling to IITs and other institutes will be done jointly and allotment of seats will be done together. "I as a student will get a rank in IIT and also get a rank for NIT and IIIT. I will give my choice in both and depending on which is my first choice in either, I will get a seat," HRD minister Kapil Sibal explained.Â
For students who have appeared for class XII board in 2012, the Council has decided that they may be allowed to sit for the board exam again if they would like to improve their performance. CBSE and state boards will be asked to make appropriate arrangements.Â
