IITs reach common ground, new format for admission announced
Gujarat Global News Network, Ahmedabad
After a month long saga, the HRD ministry and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have reached common ground over the format of the new common entrance test (CET) for undergraduate engineering courses.
The new format would use class XII board scores to shortlist students from those who clear the JEE-Main exam. Hence the desire of the HRD ministry to keep intact the importance of board exams has been satisfied while fulfilling the IITs call for autonomy.
As per the new format, all IIT aspirants will have to appear for the JEE-Main exam. Of these aspirants, only 1.5 lakh will qualify to appear for the JEE-Advanced test. The JEE- Advanced test will be held after four-six weeks of the JEE-Main exam.
All 1.5 lakh students who give JEE-Advanced test will be given a score and an all-India Rank. Â But they will be able to secure an admission into IITs only if their STD XII score is among the top 20% of their respective boards.Â
Hence, if we take last year’s Std XII scores as a reference, the cut-off percentage for a student appearing in the CBSE board will be 78%, while for one appearing in the Uttar Pradesh state board it will be 65%-66%. This is expected to standardize varying standards across central and state boards.Â
The new pattern will be implemented from 2013.Â
