Class X board exam in Gujarat to give value to value education
Gujaratglobal News Network, Gandhinagar
As per the changes announced in the Class X performance evaluation scheme by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GSHSEB), 10 per cent weightage would be given to students’ skills and values like honesty, sympathy, leadership etc. The concept has been termed as School-based Comprehensive Evaluation (SCE) system.
Hence from June 2012, along with the scholastic assessment of the students, assessment of their values and life skills would also be conducted by the Board. The Board exam paper score would carry 70 % weightage while the 30 % weightage will be allotted to the comprehensive evaluation by the schools as per the School-based Comprehensive Evaluation (SCE) system. Out of this 30 % weightage, 10 % weightage would be allotted for values and life skills. The other 20 % weightage will be for scholastic assessment.
Scholastic assessment would consist of formative and summative assessments. Under formative assessments, the students’ understanding of the syllabus will be assessed without the traditional written test system.
For this, the entire syllabus has been divided in four parts, with each assessment to be held at an interval of 45 days.
In summative assessments, which will be held on half-yearly basis and syllabus would be divided in two parts; the students would be assessed on the basis of questions and answers in a written test.
The new system of assessment would fulfill the dual purpose of ensuring continuity in evaluation and assessment of the learning and second of improving the behavioral aspects of the students including values and life skills.
