1666 candidates in fray for Gujarat Assembly Elections

In all, fate of 1666 candidates will be decided in the Assembly elections in Gujarat. Polling is in two phases- December 13 and December 17. Monday was the last day for the withdrawl of nominations for the December 17 phase of polling.
For the first phase 846 candidates are in fray for 87 seats while for the second phase 820 candidates have filed their nominations for 95 seats. For the second phase 1274 had filed their nominations. In the scrutiny 222 forms were cancelled while 232 have withdrawn their nominations.
Almost all the 182 seats have serious triangular fight in Gujarat as Gujarat Parivartan Party for former Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel has candidates in over 170 constituencies. Traditional rivals Congress and BJP have GPP as the third contestant on most of the seats.
Ahmedabad has 178 candidates for its 17 seats. Maximum number of candidates is from Dariapur, 16, while Sabarmati with five candidates has minimum candidates.
