Journalists discuss Conditions of Service affecting them

A meeting of about 35 journalists from across the country was convened in Ahmedabad on 4th February, 2012. The meeting, convened by Mr. R R Goswami former Sr. Reporter (Times of India Group), discussed the Conditions of Service affecting the journalists in the country. The meeting also discussed issue like contractual employment of Journalists, the Working Journalists Act (1955) and plight of Stringers.

The main focus of the meeting was to ameliorate the Conditions of Service/service conditions affecting the working journalists employed in newspaper establishments both in the English, language and small and medium newspapers respectively particularly the employment of journalists on contract basis which is against the Working Journalists Act. The plight of the stringers comprising of the occasional and regular contributors and the rural reporters were discussed as they are engaged and working without regular scales of wages and social security particularly the denial of pension for the journalists post retirement.

Each delegate expressed their views on the plight of the newspapers employees are facing in discharge of their duties to their employers/ newspaper establishments. Mr. Ashwin Kumar Bhatt, Veteran Journalist and former correspondent of the Times of India and Indian Express, Himmatnagar - shared his experience as a journalist and stressed the need to protect the journalists in the wake of the misuse and violation of the provisions of Working Journalists Act.

In the conclusion, the delegates stressed the need to spread this message among the journalistic fraternity across the country and bringing them under one umbrella.

On 5th February, 2012 the delegates were taken on a study tour to Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam, which is the world’s second largest concrete gravity dam. On the concluding day, 6th February the delegates were taken on a religious pilgrimage to Mata Ambaji’s shrine. After having the blessings of Mata the delegates returned back to Ahmedabad.

The meeting was sponsored by the two public sector banks, oil/petroleum Company and a fertilizer federation and also the visit to the Narmada Dam

The meeting was attended by Mr Yogesh Sharma, editor Gujaratglobal.com,  Krishna Kumar (AP), Chetan Patel, Sameer Rajput, Omkarsingh Thakur (Divya Bhaskar-a Gujarati daily), Judgal Kishore Mudgal, Pawan Kumar Sharma (Bhaskar & Rajasthan Patrika --Khandela-Rajasthan), Ashok Panda, Raj Goswami, Hariram Chaurasia and Yograj Bhatia (Chhattisgarh)  Mr Premshankar Avasthi and Mr Nirmal Yadav--Journalists Fatehpur UP) Meena Pandya (journalist-Gandhinagar) etc.
