Transit of Venus in June, 2004A rare astronomical event will be visible to Indians on June 6. Planet Venus will transit the sun in its last transit for the century. The next such transit is scheduled in 2117.The transit will be seen mainly from parts of North America, Europe and south Asia. For India, the transit will start right at 6.30 am and will continue till 10.30 am.

Gujarat Science City and various science clubs across the state have planned events around the transit to educate students. Science City in collaboration with state department of science and technology (DST) has prepared and distributed a special kit giving a comprehensive idea about the event and special filters to observe the sun.

"The transit or passage of a planet across the face of the sun is a relatively rare occurrence. As seen from the earth, only transits of Mercury and Venus are possible. On average, there are 13 transits of Mercury each century. In contrast, transits of Venus occur in pairs with more than a century separating each pair," said Ravi Saxena, additional chief secretary, DST.

A transit of Venus across the Sun takes place when the planet Venus passes directly between the Sun and Earth, becoming visible against (and hence obscuring a small portion of) the solar disk. During a transit, Venus can be seen from Earth as a small black disk moving across the face of the Sun.
