Gujarat launches diabetes management programme

Gujarat government today launched a unique diabetes management programme. It will be conducted in four districts as a pilot project with active involvement of Novo Nordisk Education Foundation. It is named Changing Diabetes Barometer.
Speaking on the occasion of signing of MOU between Gujarat Government and of Novo Nordisk Education Foundation, Health Minister J N Vyas said that though diabetes was a major health challenge before the society, its management was quite complex and it still required concrete information about its extent and nature of problems associated with it.
He said that major problem with diabetes was that its treatment was unaffordable to many. This makes diabetes care quite difficult. Talking in terms of loss because of diabetes, he said that it was estimated to be 2.1 per cent of the GDP of the country.
Under this project, the state government and the Novo Nordisk Education Foundation aims to undertake a massive diabetes control programme, which would include creating mass awareness of diabetes , conducting diabetes screening programs, enabling practical training camps for medical professionals, improving treatment of diabetes with focus on reducing complications related to diabetes with focus on reducing complications related to diabetes.
