Engg dropout held for cloning ICICI bank server

An engineering drop out turned hacker was arrested by detection of crime branch officials in Ahmedabad for trying to clone ICICI bank server. He had planned to siphon off Rs6 crore to start an IIT coaching institute.

Manish Pandey, son of a doctor from Kolkata and a fourth semester dropout of an engineering college was arrested from Lal Darwaja area of Ahmedabad. He intended to set up a clone server to facilitate transfer of funds from the bank and was allegedly being helped by a few IITians. Documents pertaining to the bank and its accountholders were recovered from his possession.

The youth had conducted a detailed 'vulnerability test' of the bank's website, checked traffic flow details, traced the bank's server at Bandra Kurla Complex (in Mumbai) and was attempting to set up a clone server to facilitate fund transfer, Crime Branch Cyber Cell head K L Patel said.

It is believed that Pandey wanted to setup an IIT-JEE coaching institute in Varanasi and tried to steal the money from to bank to use it as startup capital. He also told the police that he was helped by few IIT-Kanpur students in his mis-endeavor.

A case has been registered against Pandey under Section 65 and 66 of Information Technology (IT) Act, besides IPC 420. Spokesperson of ICICI Bank confirmed that the police had informed the bank that a particular person had attempted to run a vulnerability scan on ICICI Bank web servers.
