NIDian’s film on energy woes a winner at UN conference

A still from the movie RechargeA film Called ‘Recharge’ made by a student of the National Institute of Design (NID) showcasing energy woes in a remote village of Bihar, and how the local stores in the village have made this into a business opportunity has won at a competition that was a part of the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2011 in Durban, South Africa. 

Recharge, a one minute film, was selected as one of two best films across the globe in the category of ‘Energy’ by Television for the Environment (TVE), a UK based organization. Based on energy woes of Nawada, a village in Bihar the film was made by Film and Video Communication student Sabika Muzaffar.

She says she got the inspiration for the film while having a conversation with one of her friends who is from Nawada. Due to acute shortage of power in the village, the local store owners are giving of car battery-powered recharging facilities for mobile phones. The villagers pay Rs five for charging a phone.

After a screening in the presence of international experts and critics at Durban, the two finalist films were uploaded on the internet. The film which received maximum number of views was to be declared as the winner. Recharge was viewed more than 31,000 times while the other film was viewed 5300 times.

Muzaffar was sponsored by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to travel to Durban and participate in the conference.
